Doctoral students may now combine courses in two or more disciplines and count them as their area of concentration. The multidisciplinary areas of concentration must be selected from the disciplines recognized by Columbia University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The following disciplines are served both by faculty at Teachers College as well as by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and are therefore encouraged for selection: anthropology, economics, history, philosophy, political science, and sociology.

With this new addition, doctoral students may now select one of three doctoral programs in International and Comparative Education:

1.      Disciplinary Ph.D. Program, conferred by the Graduate School of Arts and Science of Columbia University: a 75-credit program of which 30 credits may be transferred from the previous graduate degree program and counted towards the Ph.D. credit requirement. Students select one discipline as their area of concentration. The disciplines listed above are served by faculty from Teachers College as well as from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

2.      Multidisciplinary Ph.D. Program (new!), conferred by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Columbia University: a 75-credit program of which 30 credits may be transferred from the previous graduate degree program and counted towards the Ph.D. credit requirement. Students select two or more disciplines as their areas of concentration. The disciplines listed above are served by faculty from Teachers College as well as from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

3.     Ed.D. Program, conferred by Teachers College: a 90-credit program of which 45 credits may be transferred from a previous graduate degree program and counted towards the Ed.D. credit requirement; the area of concentration is in one field of education. In the International & Comparative Education program, the following concentrations are offered: Family & Community Education; International Humanitarian Issues; International Policy and Planning; Languages, Literacies and Cultures; Latin American and Latinx Education; Peace and Human Rights Education.

For all three doctoral programs, the requirements of Teachers College’s Office of Doctoral Studies apply.
